Description:

The Pendleton Southern Highlands Blanket is a celebration of the traditional craft of weaving wool coverlets by the women of Appalachia in the southern US. These women lived in rustic cabins and filled them with goods that were made of the materials they had at hand. These families survived by hunting, gathering and small scale gardening. For cloth they grew flax, linen and sheep for wool which was hand carded and spun. Walnut shells, indigo and plants provided dye for the traditional colors of red, blue and green. Many of these Appalachian coverlets are being preserved today in private collections. Unnapped
